Johnson, who entered the final round one shot off the lead, fired a 29 on the front nine and finished 19-under par, besting second place Matt Kuchar and vaulting to the top of the FedEx Cup standings.

The Barclays, played at Plainfield Country Club in Edison, N.J., was shortened to 54 holes by the pending arrival of Hurricane Irene. Johnson birdied the first two holes and eagled the fourth to set the stage for his first victory of the season.

With the win, Johnson became the first player since Tiger Woods to win in each of his first four years on Tour. The title was the fifth of his career and it marks the second consecutive year Johnson has won a playoff event.

The victory vaulted the Coastal Carolina alum and Myrtle Beach golfer to a career-best fourth in the world golf rankings.

Johnson birdied the fifth, seventh and ninth holes, making a 25-foot birdie putt on the seventh and dicey 12-footer on the ninth. He took the lead for good when Kuchar bogeyed No. 12.

Johnson, who lived along the Grand Strand for nearly a decade, became the official spokesman for Myrtle Beach golf this spring. Even before becoming Golf Holiday’s spokesperson, Johnson was an unofficial ambassador for the community. A TPC Myrtle Beach logo has adorned his bag since he turned pro and he has never hidden his affinity for the area.

“It's where I grew as a golfer and as a person, so it's very special to me,” he said.

As part of his promotional work with Myrtle Beach, golfers have the opportunity to win a round with Johnson at the TPC Myrtle Beach.
