River Oaks Golf Plantation opened in 1987, so the course isn’t a recent addition to the Myrtle Beach golf scene, but figuratively speaking, the 27-hole layout is getting a little closer to “new” each day.

The Dunes Golf & Beach Club, Myrtle Beach’s most revered course, will host Coastal Carolina University’s 14th annual Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday General Jim Hackler Championship March 8-10. Fifteen teams from across the country will compete in the 54-hole event, which has been a proving ground for players who have gone onto to PGA Tour stardom.

Golf is a masochist’s dream. The challenge and subsequent struggles are part of the fun; they are what sustain the game over a lifetime for many of us.

On a list of Myrtle Beach’s most underrated layouts, Thistle Golf Club has to rank somewhere near the top. Sure the 27-hole Tim Cate facility deservedly earned 4.5 stars from Golf Digest, but as a semi-private club, it didn’t receive the play or attention it merited.

That all changed – with a lot of other things – when Jack Davis, who also owns International Club, purchased the club in the fall of 2013.

The Preseason Classic was played on six of the Myrtle Beach area’s best and most popular courses. True Blue, Glen Dornoch, The Witch, Wild Wing Avocet, Tradition Club and Panther’s Run all hosted the event.

The tournament kicked off with a Sunday welcome party, complete with complementary food and drinks, and also included a Wednesday awards luncheon.

The event featured a different format of play each day, beginning with best ball in the opening round, followed by combined net team score and a Texas scramble.

Glen Dornoch is one of the most challenging and scenic courses on the Myrtle Beach golf market, wowing players with views of the Intracoastal Waterway while forcing them to think their way around the course.
 

Glen Dornoch has provided some of Myrtle Beach golf’s best visuals since it opened in 1996. Five holes play along the Intracoastal Waterway and designer Clyde Johnston maximized the available land, creating a layout that is near the top of many play lists.

We consulted with Glen Dornoch’s marketing director, Jason Himmelsbach, who has played the course hundreds of times, for one man’s opinion on the course’s three best holes. Himmelsbach happily obliged.
