Bent Out of Shape? You Won’t Be at These 3 Myrtle Beach Golf Courses!

Ultradwarf strains of bermudagrass have improved considerably over the years, but many golfers prefer bentgrass, widely regarded as the game’s premier putting surface. Three Myrtle Beach courses continue to showcase bentgrass, delighting players, especially our friends from the Northeast accustomed to putting on the finely textured grass.

Crow Creek Golf Club, Man O’War and The Wizard all sport bentgrass that will be in pristine condition during Myrtle Beach’s peak spring season, and here is a closer look at each.

Located in Calabash, Crow Creek has long been one of the area’s quiet stars. The Rick Robbins design, which plays 6,099 yards from the white tees, showcases wide fairways. This allows golfers to swing away with the driver, though it remains a second-shot course. Crow Creek’s V8 bentgrass greens are often flanked by bunkers and have plenty of contour, placing a premium on hitting proper spots on the putting surfaces.

Owner Claude Pardue has long been an advocate of bentgrass. As a result, Man O’ War and The Wizard, the Mystical Golf duo, both feature the premium grass. A links-style design, Wizard features ample mounding and vegetation reminiscent of what is found in Scotland, the game’s birthplace. The par-71 Wizard, which has five par 3s, is home to generous fairways and some of the Grand Strand’s largest greens. The course’s greens average nearly 10,000 square feet per putting surface.

Man O’ War is one of Myrtle Beach’s most creative layouts. The Dan Maples design was built entirely around a 107-acre lake and water comes into play on every hole, without overwhelming players. Just like The Wizard, its sister course, every green site at Man O’ War was custom built for that particular location on the property, ensuring the long-term quality of the bentgrass putting surfaces. In addition to its smooth greens, Man O’ War is also home to the only back-to-back island greens in North America (holes 14 and 15).

For those seeking the perfect blend of pristine bentgrass greens and unforgettable design, these three courses are must plays in Myrtle Beach.
