Best Myrtle Beach Golf Courses:  Caledonia Ranked 14th Most Fun Public Course in America

September 4, 2012

Caledonia has been named one of the nation'sTop 50 Most Fun Public CoursesEveryone has heard the saying, “a bad day on the golf course is better than a good day at the office” but some courses are unquestionably more fun to play than others.

With that in mind, in addition to ranking America's 100 Greatest Courses, 100 Greatest Public and the Best in State, Golf Digest asked its panel of expert raters to give each course a “fun” score, and the layouts were ranked based on the results. The result was the recently unveiled list of the “Top 50 Most Fun Public Golf Courses.”

Not surprisingly, Myrtle Beach, America’s most fun destination, was represented on the good times list. Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, which Golf Digest ranks among “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses,” was ranked the 14th most fun public course in America.

Golf Digest said of the South Strand gem, “A Mike Strantz masterpiece weaving through mature oaks. Most fun of all might be sitting on the porch after 18 and betting on others' approach shots.”

We would only take issue with one thing, it’s much more fun to play the 18th at Caledonia with people watching you than it is to watch others!

For Caledonia, a Myrtle Beach golf favorite, it’s another in a long list of honors. Golf Magazine recently ranked the course No. 27 on its list of the “Top 100 Courses You Can Play,” and Golfweek has long included the layout among its list of the top 100 modern designs.

Caledonia, a one the most popular Myrtle Beach golf courses, is as stunning to the eyes as it is enjoyable to play. The layout is set amidst sprawling live oak trees draped in Spanish moss and plays along the Waccamaw River. The course, Strantz’s first solo effort, has been regarded as among the nation’s best since it opened in 1994.
