Big Break Myrtle Beach Episode 6 Recap: Tiger vs. Tiger to Stay Alive

November 11, 2014

Katy Harris was eliminated in Episode 6Great shots and a squandered opportunity defined the sixth episode of Big Break Myrtle Beach.

Just eight players remained and the first part of the immunity challenge took place on one of Myrtle Beach’s most popular holes, the fourth on Barefoot Resort’s Love Course.

The green is framed by the faux ruins of an old plantation home and players were challenged to chip the ball through a window in the ivy-covered ruins. The first two players to get the ball in hole would be awarded immunity.

Everyone but Jimmy, who banged the ball off the bricks, successfully chipped through the window, but no one got the ball closer than Christian’s 18 feet. In this challenge, the players closest to the hole went first and Christian, Toph and Tessa came up empty.

Charlie became the first player to…

Charlie became the first player to earn immunity, draining a 23-foot putt, and he was joined by the (at least temporarily) kinder, gentler Anthony, who made a putt from off the green, ending the challenge and securing his spot on the next show.

The second stage of the challenge remained on the 4th hole with players chipping from off the green. The two shots closest to the hole would advance.

Toph hit a great shot and was just 15 inches from the hole, and Emily was nearly as good, ending up 20 inches from the pin, seemingly securing immunity. But Christian delivered his first signature moment of the series, chipping in and then delivering an emphatic fist pump.

Emily was left to lament that sinking feeling in her stomach. She hit a quality shot, Christian just one-upped her.

Toph advanced with Christian, leaving Tessa, Katy, Emily and Jimmy still facing the prospect of elimination.

The quartet went to the sixth tee box on the Love Course and each got two shots with the player closest to the hole earning immunity. But there was one big caveat. Each player would have the opportunity to take a mulligan after one of the two shots.

All four players hit drives that left them in good shape. Jimmy was first to play his approach and he used his mulligan, hitting his second approach to 7’2” inches. Emily followed and snuggled her ball to within six feet of the hole, allowing her to win the challenge and advance.

Tessa, by virtue of finishing 16’11” from the hole, went straight to elimination and got to choose whether she wanted to bring Jimmy or Katy with her.

Tessa, who had secured immunity in the opening challenge of every previous episode, opted to play fellow LSU Tiger Katy on the 12th and 13th holes at the Love Course. Player with the highest score would be sent home.

After both players made par 4 on No. 12, the drama began on the par 5 13th. Both players hit good drives, but Tessa’s second shot plugged in the bunker. Katy was left of the green after her second and faced a delicate chip. She played the shot almost flawlessly, leaving herself a 6-foot putt for birdie.

Tessa hit a good shot, given the buried lie, blasting to approximately 15 feet from the hole, but she missed her birdie putt, leaving the match and her fate on the face of Katy’s putter.

Katy let the opportunity slip from her grasp, missing the putt and giving Tessa’s second life. The LSU alums returned to the 13th tee and while both hit balls in the fairway, Tessa enjoyed much better position.

Katy was 183 yards from the pin on her second shot and hit the ball over the green. Tessa, playing from 154 yards, hit an outstanding shot, leaving her an approximately 15-foot eagle putt.

After Katy’s chip ended up 10 feet from the hole, Tessa, with her hands shaking, lined up her eagle putt and drained it!

The eagle putt ended Katy’s Big Break Myrtle Beach experience, and surely left her lamenting the missed birdie putt that would have allowed her to advance.
