Charlie Visits the Moorland Course at Legends Golf & Resort

We took Charlie Rymer over to the Moorland Course at Legends Golf Resort to hang out with PGA Head Professional Matt Biddington. “The Big Timer” got a dose of Matt’s long game off the tee as they played No. 3. We think they had a pretty good time.

Charlie Rymer:
So we’re here at the Legends Resort and thrilled to be joined with PGA Head Professional Matt Biddington. And Matt, you guys got it going on here at Legends. Tell me big picture what folks can expect when they come here to Legends.

Matt Biddington:
The absolute golf experience. So many people, whenever they come, they check in, they check into their villa and they pretty much don’t leave for the weekend. You’ve got the three courses here. All of our rounds are all-inclusive, so you get breakfast, lunch and two drinks. Range balls are included. The range stays lit up at night until nine, 10 o’clock depending on the time of the year. You have the Ailsa Pub down in the village, you have the restaurant in the clubhouse and we’re just centrally located. It’s easy to get to North Myrtle, it’s easy to get to Surfside or Pawleys.

It’s just one of the best destinations out there right now.

Charlie Rymer:
Now we’re out on the Moorland golf course, which is a P. B. Dye design. We’ll get to that in a second, but tell me about your other two 18-hole courses you have on property first.

Matt Biddington:
Yeah, so the first one that opened up was the Heathland golf course, that’s a Tom Doak design, another famous designer. It opened up in 1990, it’s more of a true links-style golf course. It’s the more forgiving of the three that we have, but it still has some amazing golf holes. Holes 16, 17 and 18 are probably three of the better finishing holes that I’ve played.

Then you have the Parkland course, it still has some of that Scottish feel to it, but in terms of layout, it’s more traditional. Tree lined, fairways, it winds back through the housing developments in the villas that we have here on site. Great layouts.

Charlie Rymer:
Yeah, and so we’re about to head out on the Moorland course, as I mentioned it’s a P. B. Dye design and I love the work that the Dye family has done throughout their careers. The Dye courses to me are always really, really interesting. You’ve got a lot of trouble out there, but it’s also very playable as well.

Matt Biddington:
Absolutely. The trouble lies in the green complexes for the most part. It’s actually fairly forgiving off the tee box if you know kind of where that niche is. And you’ll see on three whenever we go out there, there is a little bail out area there. But absolutely, center of the green is your friend. There’s a lot of great bunkering, a lot of elevation change, tons of water, by far the most scenic golf course that we have.

Charlie Rymer:
So when folks come here to play golf, they check in, they don’t want to leave. They got the three golf courses and also the practice facility, it looks to me like it’s top-notch as well.

Matt Biddington:
Absolutely. Our 30-plus acre practice facility stays lit at night. We’ve got a acre and a quarter putting green. You’d be amazed at how many guys really think they need to work on their 350-foot putts because that’s how far it is from one end to the other. It’s great to watch.

Charlie Rymer:
Well, really cool. Nobody’s going to go hungry around here either, right?

Matt Biddington:
No, sir. No, sir. Full breakfast buffet in the morning. Lunch is a full menu for everybody that plays here, and then you can’t forget about the beer.

Charlie Rymer:
Legends is my kind of place.

Let’s head out on the golf course!

Matt Biddington:
Yeah.

Charlie Rymer:
All right, Matt, we’re out at number three. Tell me what we’re looking at in this golf hole here.

Matt Biddington:
Yeah, so this is a beautiful little hole. You can see the water just kind of hugs the left side. It’s a decent risk-reward hole. There’s definitely a bail out to the right. You could hit a hybrid, an iron or a three wood out to the right. But if you want to get aggressive, you can also rip driver over that corner and have just a little kind of flip wedge in as well, so …

Charlie Rymer:
Well, I see that both of us have the drivers, so let’s get aggressive, get after it.

Matt Biddington:
You got it.

Charlie Rymer:
Let me see what you got, bud.

Matt Biddington:
You got it.

Charlie Rymer:
That’s aggressive right there. Is that too far left or is that going to be okay?

Matt Biddington:
Should be okay.

Charlie Rymer:
That, by the way, folks, went a long ways.

Matt Biddington:
Yep, that’ll work.

Charlie Rymer:
All right.

Matt Biddington:
Good shot.

Charlie Rymer:
That’s my fairway finder right there.

All right. After what I thought was a pretty decent drive, I’m left with 110 yards.

And that’s going to be pretty decent there. But let me show you something.

Matt Biddington:
Oh yeah.

Charlie Rymer:
My man Matt, come on.

Charlie Rymer:
I’ve never been outdriven in my whole life, especially by a skinny guy.

Matt Biddington:
All right Charlie, I did get you by a little bit, but you know what they say? Drive for show, putt for dough. So let’s see if we can’t finish this hole out.

Charlie Rymer:
So all I got to tell you is, if you don’t get a decent shot at my ball, you are never going to hear the end of this.

Matt Biddington:
Wouldn’t be the first time.

Matt Biddington:
Yeah, yeah, see that? See that, you got me …

Charlie Rymer:
Nice drive.

Matt Biddington:
All right, well you called it Charlie. I’m still away. Thanks for putting the eyeball on me back there.

Charlie Rymer:
All right. I’m going to give you the rest of that one.

Matt Biddington:
Yeah, that’s nice of you.

Matt Biddington:
All right, roll it in, buddy.

Charlie Rymer:
Aw, didn’t hit it. That’s all right.

Matt Biddington:
A couple of boring pars.

Charlie Rymer:
But hey, I’ll tell you this Matt, I really like that you brought me out here to number three because this is a hole when you stand up on a tee the first time, you see water, you see bunkers. But after you’ve played this golf course a few times, there really is some room out here. I mean this is a pretty good-sized green, it just doesn’t look that big the first time you see it.

Matt Biddington:
Absolutely, it can be intimidating.

Charlie Rymer:
Yeah, and that’s pretty typical from what I see in Dye golf. That first time it scares you, but as you play it more and more, you sort of figure it out.

Matt Biddington:
Yeah, whenever someone asks for a tip for Moorland I tell them the center of the green is your friend.

Charlie Rymer:
Yeah.

Matt Biddington:
I don’t care where the pin is, if your ball’s in the center of the green you’re doing all right on that one.

Charlie Rymer:
You’re going to be in good shape.

Matt Biddington:
Yeah, yeah.

Charlie Rymer:
All right, let’s see what else we got.

Matt Biddington:
All right.
