Charlie’s Travels: Reading the Deep Green at Caledonia’s 3rd Hole

In this video, Charlie’s playing the par-3 3rd hole at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club – a perfect example of how your tee shot trajectory can be dramatically different from front to back on a deep green.

Charlie Rymer:
Couple of tips for you when you’re playing a green that is this deep. First and foremost, if you happen to have a front hole location, you want the ball coming in high with a lot of spin on it. You want it landing on the grain and stopping. Otherwise, it’s going to get farther and farther away from the hole. So in this case, I’ve got the ball teed up just a little bit. That’ll help me get it up in the air. And I want to make sure I make a full swing. The harder I swing at it, the higher it goes and the more spin it’s going to have on it, which is ideal for that front hole location.

Now, if the flag is in the back, the opposite is true. I want the ball coming in lower. I don’t want to have any spin on it. I’d like to land it in the middle of the green and have a chance to release to the back of the green. What do I do there? Well, actually swing a little bit easier. Well, I like to think of it as being a little bit shorter. So this is just a little three-quarter six iron. We’ll get that ball launching a little bit lower, land in the middle of that green, and hopefully release back up close to that rear hole location.
