Dunes Club Named by LINKS Magazine Among America’s 10 Most Influential Designs You Can Play

If you’re seeking the best of the best but don’t have access to private clubs, Joe Passov of LINKS Magazine presents “The 10 Most Influential American Designs You Can Play” – and The Dunes Golf & Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C. is among them.

The host of the PGA TOUR’s 2024 Myrtle Beach Classic joins an elite group of courses that includes the top venues in destination golf, many of which have hosted PGA TOUR, LPGA Tour and USGA championship events. Passov’s list includes:

1. Pinehurst Resort (No. 2) – Pinehurst, N.C.
2. Pebble Beach Golf Links – Pebble Beach, Calif.
3. Bethpage State Park (Black) – Farmingdale, N.Y.
4. The Dunes Golf & Beach Club – Myrtle Beach, S.C.
5. Harbour Town Golf Links – Hilton Head Island, S.C.
6. TPC Sawgrass (Players Stadium) – Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
7. Shadow Creek Golf Course – North Las Vegas, Nev.
8. Bandon Dunes Golf Resort (Bandon Dunes) – Bandon, Ore.
9. Bandon Dunes Golf Resort (Bandon Preserve) – Bandon, Ore.
10. Sweetens Cove Golf Club – South Pittsburg, Tenn.

In describing The Dunes Club’s inclusion, Passov writes:

“Post-World War II design ushered in the rise of the aerial game and ‘heroic’ risk/reward architecture. No one epitomized that philosophy better than Robert Trent Jones Sr., whose trademarks included long ‘runway’ tees, extensive deployment of water hazards—expressed brilliantly in 1947 at the Dunes’s par-five 13th, called ‘Waterloo,’ that arcs around Singleton Lake—and elevated greens, which enhanced shot values and facilitated drainage. A superb routing added to the allure of the Dunes, and the design tenets on display dominated the architecture profession for more than three decades.”
