Five Things You Need to Know About the Wizard

July 18, 2014
  1. Wizard brings a Scottish flair to Myrtle BeachIf you’ve never played golf in the nation of the game’s birth, the Wizard offers a glimpse of Scotland. From the tee, mounding and vegetation are visible to the naked eye, but pot bunkers often lurk off the fairway, as they do in Scotland.

  2. The greens at the Wizard are huge, a common trait among Scottish links courses. The smallest putting surface is more than 10,000-square-feet, so make sure you work on your lag putting and be prepared for the occasional three-putt.

  3. The fairways at the Wizard are, comparatively speaking, as wide as the greens are big. Finding the short grass shouldn’t be a problem, but merely hitting the fairway isn’t the goal. Being on the proper side of the fairway is often crucial to scoring well, allowing players the preferred line to the green.

  4. The Wizard, along with Man O’War, continues to be home to thriving bentgrass greens. The open layout allows wind to flow freely through the course, providing needed air in the summer months. If you like bentgrass greens, you will love the Wizard.

  5. Do not be fooled by the distance on the scorecard. Golfers will occasionally look at the 6,138 yards the regular tees play from and move back to the championship tees. The Wizard is a par 71 with five par 3s, and the wind is often a significant factor. The regular tees offer plenty of challenge.
