Golf Tip from Paige Spiranac: Relaxation Technique

We hear often when we’re tense or nervous, “Just breathe.” But what does that really mean – and how does it help your golf game? Paige Spiranac is here to show us a simple technique for doing it right, and for getting the calming effect we truly seek.

Hey everyone, it’s Paige, and we’re in Myrtle Beach today and I’m going to give you another tip – but this one’s going to be a little bit different from the tips I’ve given you before.

We all get nervous and tense on the golf course, right? And then everyone tells us to breathe, to breathe, to breathe. What does that even mean? Because then, you always see people go (hunch shoulders while breathing quickly). Because they’re so nervous and they’re so tense and you can’t perform when you’re out on the golf course, when you are feeling so much tension. A lot of people actually breathe and their soldiers go up, which actually puts more tension in your upper body. So when you’re breathing, don’t (hunch your shoulders). That’s not the right way to do it. You’re actually going to feel so much more tension in your upper body, and then you’re going to struggle to actually swing.

A board psychologist told me to breathe from your belly. So put your hands on your stomach. And when I’m really nervous or in a stressful situation, in my pre-shot routine I often stand behind the ball and you’ll see my hands go on my stomach. So you can feel your stomach expand and contract. This is a great way to get that tension out. You’re refocusing on what you need to be doing.

And then I do this maybe three to five times, depending on how stressed out I am. So mostly five times. And it really just gets me focused and I feel more calm. This is a great thing to do before, if you’re teeing off and you’re nervous or you have a stressful shot, or really anytime that you’re feeling uncomfortable or stressed out. Make sure you put your hands on your stomach, breath from your belly, not from your shoulders.

You know this isn’t a traditional golf tip, but I think this is really going to help you on the golf course. So try it out, and I hope that it works for you. Thank you for watching!
