PGA Professional and Wake Forest Men’s Head Golf Coach Jerry Haas (-7) withstood a furious second-round charge Tuesday from amateur Logan Sowell and won a three-hole playoff to capture the 69th PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com South Carolina Open Presented by Paysley at The Reserve Club in Pawleys Island, S.C.
Haas followed his tournament-low first round of 64 with a 73 that included a well-time birdie on No. 17 that earned him the playoff bid against Sowell, a College of Charleston senior whose second-round 66 included eight birdies. PGA Professional Brock Elder of Randleman, N.C. (Forest Oaks C.C.) finished one stroke behind the leaders, carding seven birdies Tuesday in a bogey-free second round that was the day’s lowest (65).
Tournament competitors helped raise funds for two non-profit organizations: PGA REACH Carolinas and Project Golf, each of which offers golf development programs for juniors, military veterans, and people of diverse backgrounds. Pledges toward competitors’ 36-hole scores included donations earned toward players’ pars, birdies, and eagles.
The Carolinas PGA Section partnered with PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com, Paysley, True Temper and the PGA TOUR to conduct this year’s event.
