Virginia Tech’s Charlie Hanson holds the outright lead in the men’s division while University of North Carolina at Wilmington teammates Mallory Fobes and Deborah Spair share the women’s division lead after second-round play Thursday at the 2021 Golfweek Myrtle Beach Amateur at the Dye Course at Barefoot Resort.
Hanson’s 1-over round of 73 puts him at 2-under par for the tournament and keeps him two strokes clear of Purdue’s Herman Wibe Sekne, while Noah Kumar (Florida Southern College) and Brett Montgomery (Marshall) are tied for third at 1-over par.
Spair’s and Fobes’ even-par rounds of 72 leave them as the only players under par for the tournament thus far in the women’s division, with each at 1-under and one stroke clear of Isabel Amezcua (North Carolina State). Amezcua’s second-round score of 73 leaves her at even par for the competition.
The Golfweek Myrtle Beach Amateur field represents a complete cross-section of college golf’s competitive landscape that includes players from NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NJCAA and NAIA schools, with 50 men and 23 women teeing it up this week. The 54-hole stroke play event concludes with final-round play on Friday. Spair, Fobes and Amezcua tee off in the women’s division’s final grouping at 8:33 a.m., while Kumar tees it up at 10:39 a.m. and the final men’s grouping of Hanson, Sekne and Montgomery starts play at 10:48 a.m.
