Kelly Tilghman, Charlie Rymer Lend a Hand to First Tee

August 1, 2013

Golf Channel stars Kelly Tilghman and Charlie Rymer were in Myrtle Beach to help support a fundraiser for the area First Tee chapters. Tilghman, who was raised in North Myrtle Beach, and Rymer, whose family vacationed along the Grand Strand, are both intimately familiar with the area.

The duo made live appearances on the hit Golf Channel show Morning Drive from Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, where the tournament was held.

Rymer and Tilghman took time to talk with us about their respect for the First Tee, and the local PGA professional who impacted each of their lives.

Tilghman: Everything I’ve ever done is through the game of golf. Everyone I practically know is through the game of golf. Charlie and I put our heads together -we both grew up playing in the Palmetto State – and we wanted to find a way to give back to the community. Because of Golf Channel’s partnership with the First Tee, we thought this would be a no-brainer.

Rymer: First Tee is something I’ve learned more and more about. I’ve really turned into a big fan; the program, the values they teach. Kelly and I have a great friend here in Gene Weldon, who is the head professional at Thistle Golf Club. Gene actually taught Kelly growing up and I’ve known Gene since I was a kid. When we decided we were going to do something here, we reached out to him. Gene is a huge supporter of the First Tee.

Tilghman: The millions of children they reach out to are benefitting in great ways. It also makes the game accessible to kids who otherwise wouldn’t have had that opportunity. I think that is the biggest thrill for me.
