John Murphy (-6), Jiri Zuska (-4), Matthias Schmid (-2) and Trevor Johnson (-1) put the Cardinals two strokes clear of North Carolina (-11), whose four starters led by Austin Greaser (-5) also finished under par. Kent State (-10) and North Carolina State (-9) rounded out the top four teams after Day 1, followed by a trio of teams tied for fifth at -4 (Indiana, North Florida and host Coastal Carolina).

Murphy’s 66 put him in a three-way tie for first place in the individual competition with North Florida’s Nick Infanti and Kent State’s Josh Gilkison. Greaser is one of four golfers just one shot off the individual lead, joined by North Carolina teammate Ryan Burnett, North Carolina State’s Maximilian Steinlechner and Coastal Carolina’s Viktor Olund.

Round 2 play tees off at 8:45 a.m. Monday.
