Emily Mathews (Mebane, NC) shot an even-par 72 while Rowan Sullivan (Charleston, SC) and Andrew McLauchlan (Neptune Beach, FL) survived a three-way, sudden death playoff on Saturday at TPC Myrtle Beach to qualify for the 6th Annual Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship Presented by Fujikura, set for March 5-7 at the renowned Tom Fazio/Lanny Wadkins design.
Mathews edged Tatum Walsh (Midlothian, VA) by one stroke to earn the sole Girls Division’s bid up for grabs at Saturday’s qualifying event. Sullivan and McLauchlan earned the two Boys Division bids over Josh Lendach (Raleigh, NC) after each player completed regulation play with a 1-over-par 73. Sullivan’s birdie on No. 10 in the first playoff hole secured his bid as the others made par, while McLauchlan birdied No. 10 on the second playoff hole to earn his way into the World Junior field.
Mathews becomes the second member of her immediate family to earn a spot in the event field through this qualifying event. Her brother, Nicholas, earned a spot in the 2019 field by winning a five-way, sudden-death playoff at TPC Myrtle Beach and is currently playing collegiate golf at North Carolina State.
More than 80 players from 14 states competed in Saturday’s qualifier, coming from as far away as Indiana, Kansas and Massachusetts in their quest to earn a coveted spot in one of junior golf’s premier events. The steadily growing strength of the Dustin Johnson World Junior field has earned it elite status, with Golfweek ranking its most recent field as the fourth-strongest junior tournament field in the United States for 2020.
