Myrtle Beach 9-11 Memorial Breaks Ground

May 17, 2012

Myrtle Beach city and tourism officials broke ground on the construction of the Myrtle Beach 9-11 Memorial Monday evening at Broadway at the Beach. The centerpiece of the exhibit will be a ribbon beam from the fallen North Tower of the World Trade Center that FDNY firefighters gave to Myrtle Beach tourism officials.

The Myrtle Beach 9-11 Memorial will display the ribbon beam and a 9-11 timeline in a circular shrine flanked by three American flags. Construction of the memorial will be completed in early September, 2012.

“The terrorists attacks of September 11, 2001 were a national tragedy,” said Bill Golden, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday’s president. “This memorial will allow area residents and the millions of tourists who come here each year to pay their respects to the people who lost their lives that day, and remember the first responders whose heroics saved countless more lives.”

The Myrtle Beach 9-11 Memorial will be located on the 29th avenue side of Broadway at the Beach and will be alongside the Unity Memorial, an exhibit created by the Boy Scouts to honor the memory of 9-11 victims.

The Myrtle Beach 9-11 Memorial will be paid for using private funds. Anyone wishing to donate to the construction of the memorial should contact, Jenna Hottel, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday, at 843-477-8833.

Monday’s groundbreaking ceremony was in conjunction with the Myrtle Beach Never Forgets Memorial Golf Outing, an event that attracts hundreds of firefighters to Myrtle Beach.
