Myrtle Beach Golf Buzz: 21 Main is the Best New Entry on the Menu

August 8, 2012

Myrtle Beach Golf Buzz goes to 21 MainThe Grand Strand is home to more than a thousand restaurants, so it’s not easy for a new establishment to earn immediate acceptance as one of the best, but the area’s newest steakhouse has done just that. 21 Main, located at North Beach Plantation, has taken its seat alongside New York Prime and Ruth’s Chris as the area’s best places to order a steak. In this installment of the Myrtle Beach Golf Buzz, host Blair O’Neal gives you an inside look at 21 Main and a menu that will leave your mouth watering!

Blair O’Neal: Hi, I'm Blair O'Neal with The Golf Buzz, presented by Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday. Today I'm with Jim Horkan, General Manager of 21 Main Steakhouse, located in North Myrtle Beach. Thanks for having us today.

Jim Horkan: Thank you, it's my pleasure.

Blair: Can you tell us a little bit about 21 Main Steakhouse?

Jim: Sure, 21 Main actually originates up in Long Island, New York, actually Sayville. That's the original. My owners came down here a couple of years ago, they fell in love with the Myrtle Beach style, came down here and was offered to take over all the food and beverage on North Beach plantation property. They decided to open their second steakhouse, because we're not, we're not a franchise or a chain or anything like that.

Blair: All right.

Jim: This is their second one they opened. We have a wide variety of menu so they thought it would be a really good fit for this town. So “21 Main” actually people get lost here in town, because they go up to Main Street thinking that's where it is, but actually it's 21 Main in Sayville, as the reason of the title.

Blair: So you've got to keep the two straight?

Jim: Yes, absolutely, GPS can screw you up, definitely.

Blair:  So for our golfers who are in town visiting and they want a nice steak, this is the place to come.

Jim: We are the home for you. Like the steak I have in front of me right here, I got a 32oz certified Angus beef prime Tomahawk Rib Eye. The bone hangs off the plate. You've got about a 6-inch bone there. It's a spectacular steak. Usually one that comes through the restaurant, many more are ordered.

Blair: You've got to come hungry.

Jim: Absolutely. It's a big old steak.

Blair: It smells delicious.

Jim: Thirty-two ounces of love right there, that's for sure.

Blair:  And what about the dish in front of me?

Jim: This is our Low Country Shrimp and Grits. Which, in the middle of the plate, there is your Grit Cake and then you have your four Blackened Shrimp.  And it's done, our little tweak of low country style.

Blair: And I see a little flower in the middle, can I eat that?

Jim: Yes, absolutely. All of our garnishes that we put on our plates are all edible. We actually get all of our flowers down locally down on Rose, at Lee's Farm, they're picked daily.

Blair: Oh, I love that. I love the idea of that. I like that I have a pretty flower on the plate and, that I can eat it, as well.

Jim: Absolutely.

Blair: What about Happy Hour menus?

Jim: Since we're coming up into the season, starting May 1st, we'll be doing Happy Hour, Monday-Friday from 4:00 to 7:00, but then the kitchen opens for regular menu at 5:00 daily.

Blair: Okay. So come to dinner, 5:00 is the soonest we can get in?

Jim: Absolutely, but our Happy Hour, you got so many good options there; we got about ten different appetizers you can get under $10.00.

Blair: That sounds like a great deal.

Jim: Yes, absolutely. And you get wine, liquor, and beer at a very discounted price, which not many places in town do that.

Blair: I have a nice looking cocktail in front of me, what's this?

Jim: This is our signature martini here at 21 Main called the “21 Main Attraction.” It actually has Ketel One, Citroen Vodka, little bit of Cointreau, a little bit of lime juice, and topped off with the white cranberry juice, which, that's why it's not red of course. And the interesting little thing that's in there is, a maraschino cherry inside of that nice little garnish, to add to it.

Blair: And the wine, you have a nice wine selection here as well?

Jim: Yes, actually we only have about 150 bottles on our list, but it's a very wide variety. I'm more of a boutique kind of wine guy, so I try to throw on some wines that nobody has ever seen before, they can't get around town, just to open up everybody's eyes instead of just the mainstream wines. We're looking to grow every year with the wine list.

Blair: Sounds good. Good food. Great menu.

Jim: Good times.

Blair: Nice drink selection. So how do our golfers go about making a reservation when they come in to visit?

Jim: Just get on the phone and call 843-315-3000. If you want to check our menu our or anything like that beforehand, you can go to 21MainatNorthBeach.com or you can check us out on Facebook, which is “21 Main at North Beach.”

Blair: Perfect. Thank you so much.

Jim: You're very welcome.

Blair: Thanks for having us, inviting us to your beautiful restaurant. I'm Blair O'Neal and thanks for watching The Golf Buzz.
