Myrtle Beach Golf Course Ratings:  Three Best Holes on the Heathland Course at Legends Resort

September 14, 2012

Heathland Legends Resort, Myrtle Beach golfHeathland at Legends Resort is one of the only links style courses on the Myrtle Beach golf scene. The sprawling fairways and expansive greens associated with links golf have helped make it one of the area’s most popular layouts.

We asked Legends head pro, Matt Biddington, to identify the Heathland’s three best holes, and after much deliberation – he really struggled with leaving No. 18 out – he delivered a list that’s hard to argue with.

– If there is a surprise inclusion on Biddington’s list, it’s the 359-yard fourth hole. The short par 4 is a dogleg left, opening up the possibility that long hitters can drive the green with a tailwind, but it’s a risk-reward choice. Tall heather grass lines the right side of the fairway, and a green that slopes from left to right and front to back raise the stakes.

Avoid the greenside bunkers on the left at all costs.

“Even if you put a drive out there that is 60 yards out, it’s not an easy 60 yards,” Biddington said. “It’s just an interesting hole.”

– The par 5 13th hole is dozy. A creek runs up the right side before intersecting the fairway 180 to 200 yards from the hole. The green isn’t reachable in two, so golfers have to make a crucial decision on their second.

“Do you want to layup on the left side of the fairway or do you want to try and get over the creek on the right side,” said Biddington. “It’s my absolute favorite (hole).”

The angle coming in is better from the right and it offers a chance to get closer to the green, but your risk of drowning a ball is much greater.

On your next Myrtle Beach golf trip, you can make the decision

– The longest par 4 on the course, No. 16 has a split fairway that is divided by a creek. The right fairway is the preferred route as the hole plays straight. A massive fairway bunker that is walled by 10-15 foot long railroad ties sits in the middle of the fairway 40 yards short of the green.

The bunker creates the illusion of being green-side, adding to the challenge of the hole.

“It’s one of the holes you can’t just hit it anywhere (off the tee),” according to Biddington. “I think it’s more aesthetically pleasing than (visually) daunting.”

Regardless of how it looks, it’s the hardest hole on the back nine.
