North Carolina Rolls to 2020 General Hackler Championship Victory

North Carolina took a five-stroke lead into final-round play Tuesday at the 19th Annual General Hackler Championship at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club, and promptly stepped on the gas pedal en route to a tournament-low round of 279 (-9) and a 13-stroke victory.

Liberty (-8), Wake Forest (-7) and East Tennessee State (-5) rounded out the top finishing teams. Ryan Burnett (T2, -6) paced a Tar Heels squad that saw four of its five players finish at or below par for the tournament, including Ryan Gerard (-4), Austin Hitt (-1) and Austin Greaser (E).

Zack Taylor (-8) of host school Coastal Carolina won the individual championship with a two-stroke victory over a group of four golfers that included East Tennessee State’s Trevor Hulbert (who posted Tuesday’s low round of 67), North Carolina’s Ryan Burnett, Wake Forest’s Eric Bae and North Carolina State’s Benjamin Shipp. Burnett, playing in the day’s final grouping, was the last player with a chance to catch Taylor, but his approach on 18 found the water and led to a double bogey.

This year’s General Hackler Championship field boasted seven of 15 teams ranked among the nation’s best by Golfstat: Wake Forest (7th), Louisville (14th), East Tennessee State (25th), North Carolina (26th), Liberty (35th), South Carolina (39th) and North Florida (46th). North Carolina State, Kent State, Penn State, Coastal Carolina, UNC-Greensboro, East Carolina, Kansas State and Wisconsin rounded out the 15-team field.
