If you’re driving either direction on Ocean Highway in Pawleys Island, don’t blink or you’ll miss it – and deprive yourself of one of the best pre- or post-round meals you can get in “The Golf Capital of the World.”
Just make sure you’ve got “12223 Ocean Hwy, Pawleys Island, SC 29585” bookmarked in your Google Maps. And look for the pelican and his pink bird pal perched atop the posts.
That’s where you’ll find Litchfield Restaurant – the uber-popular, full-service roadside diner that’s home to an extraordinary array of breakfast and lunch options. Not to mention its many slogans:
“Where the Locals Eat.”
“Best Breakfast in Town.”
“Breakfast & Lunch with a Southern Touch.”
Play Golf Myrtle Beach’s intrepid team of culinary experts on this day (Joe Novak, Rob Spallone, and yours truly) did its best to spread the wealth to cover different options and see for themselves what all the fuss has been about.
After an opener of biscuits & sausage gravy for the table to sample (it lasted all of a few minutes), it was quickly on to the main courses. Rob went the traditional breakfast route, opting for the Steak & Eggs: steak medium rare, eggs scrambled with American cheese, fried potatoes, and buttered toast. Rob’s verdict: “Ten out of 10, with the eggs cooked perfectly.”
Joe went to the lunch menu for the Crab Cake Sandwich with lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise to go with a side of fries, and a dipping sauce that looked like a remoulade, but didn’t matter to the customer because it was his favorite part of it. “I don’t know what it is,” Joe said with each dip, “but it’s delicious.”
And for me, the Western Omelet – three eggs mixed with ham, green peppers, onion, tomato, and cheese – paired with fruit salad and two healthy slabs of beefsteak tomato. Whether you kick it up a notch with Pete’s Red Hot or leave it as is, you can’t go wrong either way with this one.
All this combined with quick and super-friendly service, and we got the gist quickly. Litchfield Restaurant more than lived up to the hype.
Litchfield Restaurant is located on the west side of Ocean Highway and just a stone’s throw from all the Myrtle Beach area’s exceptional South Strand golf courses. They open Monday through Friday at 6:30 a.m., serve breakfast all day, and stay open until 2 p.m. for the lunch crowd. Weekend hours are a bit tighter (6:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturday, 7:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Sunday), so be sure to plan your pre- or post-round meals accordingly.
Whatever you do, just don’t wait as long as we did to check this place out!
