Rymer: My Top 5 Choices of Last-Minute Holiday Gifts for the Golfer in Your Life

By Charlie Rymer

I know I look like Santa. Maybe not as much as John Daly does, but Ho Ho Ho anyway.

Yes, it’s my favorite time of year, and even though I haven’t been on the course much because of health issues this year, I’m on the mend and aiming to be back playing some golf by the end of January. And when I get out there, I’ll want to have the latest gear and gadgets.

So if you’re looking for last-minute golf gifts for that special someone in your life, here are my recommendations!

I’ve seen a lot of great products over the years, but I’ve gotta tell ‘ya the Weatherman Umbrella is best in class. This thing is indestructible. There’s nothing worse than taking a great golf trip and having your cheap umbrella go down when a little squall blows through. This thing is Jim Cantore-proof! It would take a Category 5 to break this fine piece of equipment.

I like listening to some tunes when I’m out playing, with Larry Fleet currently at the top of my playlist. He makes me cry! Love him. And Larry sure sounds good on the JBL Flip 3. It’s just the right size for golf. The sound is awesome, and you can even use it as a speakerphone. It’s waterproof, too! Just don’t play it so loud that you distract golfers who aren’t interested in hearing Larry sing about “Holding Her and Loving You.”

I love products from Stitch. I especially like their golf bags. In fact, I have two of them. When I know I’m gonna be on a cart I use the Stitch Cart Bag in all black (pictured). I know it intimidates my opponents. It’s just so damn cool. I also have the SL2 carry stand bag for when I’m gonna be hoofin’ it (It could happen!). It’s stylish and light. They use high tech materials that have a really neat texture. A great feature is that you can rig it for one shoulder strap, or two.  I’m a 1 strapper and those bags are hard to find these days.

My big splurge item is a full bag fitting from PXG. I went through one this year and couldn’t be happier. They run specials from time to time that can ease the financial pain. At my age, I’m more concerned with how the gear looks than how it performs. But I’ve gotta tell ‘ya, PXG does both. The gear looks incredible in the bag and in your hands. The feel is “like butta” through the entire set. And they worked some serious magic on the Sugar Daddy II wedges. The feel is incredible, and the grooves let you “spin the britches off it.”

Two of my favorite things are golf and BBQ. Now, thanks to Traeger, I can do both at the same time. My wife just got me a Traeger Ironwood 885 for my birthday. It’s a fine unit. I can cook 10 whole chickens at once! Cooking on this baby is so easy. It has an incredible app that you download and it hooks the grill up to the internet. The app walks you through the steps to make your favorite BBQ. I like pulled pork. Season it in the morning.  Load up the Traeger with hickory pellets and set the grill at 225 degrees on Super Smoke. Head to the golf course and monitor your cook all day. A probe tells you the internal temperature of the meat and the ambient temperature of the grill. Turn the temp down if it’s cooking too fast. Turn it up if it’s going too slow. Put it to warm when it’s done. BBQ and golf … both at the same time. That makes for a glorious day!

Merry Christmas!
