Whether golfers are looking to play a quick round on the way into town or tee it up as their trip comes to a close, there is a quartet of courses located along Highway 9, one of the major arteries into the area, that are ideal choices.
Diamondback Golf Club, Crown Park Golf Club, Aberdeen Country Club and Colonial Charters Country Club offer a combination of value and convenience that has made them a favorite of traveling golfers.
Diamondback has a scary name but provides a friendly experience. The Russell Breeden layout requires an accurate driver, but if you are playing from the short grass, a good day should await, especially on greens that are as receptive as they are true. Don’t be frightened by the name on the Myrtle Beach area’s westernmost course. A round at Diamondback is a good time.
Golf is a challenging game for the best of players, so there is no such thing as an easy course, but some layouts are more playable than others and that’s a group that Crown Park happily falls into. Featuring generous fairways and a slope rating of 121, Crown Park allows every opportunity to begin or end your trip with a low score.
A Tom Jackson design, Aberdeen plays along the protected Waccamaw riverfront preserve providing natural beauty and abundant wildlife on a course that offers a links-ish style experience. The front nine features larger greens and more significant undulation while the putting surfaces on the home nine tend to be smaller; both sides highlight the importance of a strong wedge game. Aberdeen’s clubhouse restaurant is outstanding, making it an ideal spot to grab a quick meal before heading out.
Few courses along the Grand Strand deliver the value provided by Colonial Charters, a semi-private club that specializes in customer service. With two waterfalls and a unique design, Colonial Charters is a treat to play. The layout doesn’t overwhelm players with length, providing everyone a chance to score.
These four Highway 9 courses allow you to begin or end your trip on a high note, making all of them worth a visit.
