Coming in too much “over the top” is a common swing flaw, and so is swinging too much from the inside! In this video tip, Scott Tanguay of the Coastal Golf Academy in Myrtle Beach, S.C. is here to demonstrate a simple practice range drill you can use to help reinforce the proper swing method!
Scott Tanguay:
Today we’re going to talk about – and this is a common problem for most. I see this in a lot of ladies, also in really good players, which is kind of coming too much from the inside. A lot of people struggle with coming over the top, but you could also come from the inside too much. You could do almost too much of a good thing. You get a lot of bladed shots, right thin, pushes out to the right, or you can kind of come over it and snap hook it. So for those people, we want to get right back on the plane line.
So, we come in, this is probably my favorite drill for this, it’s simple. Putting an alignment stick behind you at a little bit of an angle, and the goal is just to swing in front of it the whole time. Now, for someone that comes over the top, it’s probably not a great drill, but if you’re someone that’s struggling with a really flat swing, I see this a lot with the ladies, really flat and across, and then we drop it in here too much, you’re going to deal with a lot of chunking and thinning. You’re not going to hit many solid shots, you’re going to be struggling to make a divot.
So what we want to think is is pretty simple, is keep the club in the hands in front of the stick. If you’re someone that does come too much from the inside, it might even feel like you’re coming a little bit over the top. That’s okay. Plenty of pros, you see the guys on TV doing an over exaggeration to kind of even it out when they swing it. So there’s nothing wrong with that. So we’re here. Again, a bad one would be too flat, too close to the stick, or even under it obviously would be bad.
Okay, so we’re here. How do I keep the club more on plane, and keep it in front of the stick to hit a solid shot? And you’ll hit much more solid shots like that. The ball’s not going to curve as much. You’ll hit it a lot straighter, take more of a divot. It should be easier on your body as well. Because through 18 holes you keep going this flat, sideways one, and try and come underneath it, that’s a hell of a lot of work for you. So we’re here. Again, keep nice takeaway out in front of you, get to the top and not so shallow from the inside here. In front of the stick.
