The first focus was on supporting lateral movement. The next, as we’ll see in part three of Classic Swing Golf School’s latest series of instructional videos on using ground forces to improve power in your golf swing, is on rotation. Classic Swing’s Stefany King is here to introduce two exercises that will improve both strength and flexibility in that pursuit!
Stefany King:
Hey guys! As we’re talking about using the ground in our golf swing, I’m going to be doing a couple exercises out here in my two videos. And the first one I’m going to be doing is squats. What we have to make sure of, as we’re using our hips in the golf swing: if our glutes are not strong enough, we are not going to be able to maintain our spine angle in our golf swing. As we do squats, that’s going to definitely strengthen my glutes in my swing.
What I’m going to do is I’m going to take my big medicine ball here, it’s about six pounds. I’m going to hold it out in front of me, and I’m just going to get in a squat stance and do about 10 squats. I’m going to do three series of them. I could do a little more of a sumo squat here, so I get a little bit deeper in my back swing. I’m going down and up, down and up. And as I come up, I’m going to make sure I squeeze my glutes as I come up. That’s going to be exercise number one.
Now, if we think about a golf swing, as we’re doing that, I’m going to take a couple Frisbees here, and this is a good drill to work on the rotation as I think about my golf swing. I’m going to take a Frisbee in my left hand, right arm is going to be behind my back, and I’m going to make my load-up. I’m going to make my turn going back.
I make a good right hip turn here. And then as I come through, I’m going to really feel my left side, my chest is opening up, my hips are opening up so I can keep the hips rotating through the golf swing. As I do this drill, I’m going to hold the Frisbee, I’m going to make my turn and throw the Frisbee behind my back as I turn. One more time. Left hand with the Frisbee, making that wind-up, good load-up back, and then turn and open the left side through the swing. As I grab my driver, I get myself set. And again, I’m thinking about a good turn, good turn back, and then really let the left side turn as I come through the shot.
Work on that turn!
