As Steve Dresser of the Steve Dresser Golf Academy at True Blue Golf Club in Pawleys Island, S.C. shows us, the underhand toss of a ball is the simplest way to show you that you can properly swing a golf club, too. See what he’s talking about in this helpful video demonstration!
Steve Dresser:
So this is nothing new or earth shattering, but it’s still relevant even to the modern day golf swing. If you could toss a ball underhanded, there’s really no reason you can’t swing a golf club. And it’s all about sequencing.
I didn’t just flick it with my arm. I took my arm back a little bit. I didn’t go back really far. You notice I didn’t get it all way up here are behind me. And then to start forward, you can see it’s really a lower body move, pressuring into the left side, rotating, and then you just let go of the ball. If I want to throw it a little farther, I might go back a little farther, but I mostly going to turn through faster and swing my arm a little faster.
So your golf club is really nothing more than an arm extender. Mine happens to be custom made just for me, so it reaches right down there to the bottom of the golf ball and I can make essentially the same move. Of course, it’s going to go farther because I’ve got a lot longer arm and more leverage, but just think of it as a nice little underhand toss that doesn’t get interrupted by the ball.
That thing’s only an ounce and a half. Don’t let it make you think it’s a brick wall and you’re going to crash into it. Just keep moving through!
