Virginia Tech, UNCW Players Make Strong Statements in First-Round Play of the Golfweek Myrtle Beach Amateur

Six players from the men’s division and three from the women’s division completed first-round play under par Wednesday at the 2nd Annual Golfweek Myrtle Beach Amateur at The Dye Course at Barefoot Resort.

Virginia Tech teammates Charlie Hanson and Connor Burgess share the first-round lead with Brett Montgomery of Marshall University after each player carded 3-under scores of 69. Herman Wibe Sekne (Purdue) sits in fourth place at 2-under, while Connor Johnson Jr. (Virginia Tech) and Noah Kumar (Florida Southern College) are tied for fifth at 1-under.

LEADERBOARD

University of North Carolina at Wilmington teammates Mallory Fobes and Deborah Spair share the lead with North Carolina State’s Isabel Amezcua in the women’s division after completing first-round play with 1-under scores of 71. Smith Knaffle (College of Charleston) lurks in fourth place, just two strokes behind the leaders.

The Golfweek Myrtle Beach Amateur field represents a complete cross-section of college golf’s competitive landscape that includes players from NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NJCAA and NAIA schools, with 50 men and 23 women teeing it up this week. The 54-hole stroke play event continues with second-round play Thursday and final-round action on Friday.
