2021 Men’s Champion Charlie Hanson

Charlie Hanson of Virginia Tech hit a miraculous approach on the final hole to save par and win the men’s division, and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington’s Mallory Fobes shot 3-under 69 Friday to win the women’s division of the 2021 Golfweek Myrtle Beach Amateur at The Dye Course at Barefoot Resort.

FINAL LEADERBOARDS

After Florida Southern College’s Noah Kumar recorded a birdie-par finish that got him to the clubhouse within one stroke of the lead, Hanson’s tee shot on the par-4 18th veered far right across the adjacent fairway, coming to rest perilously close to the water’s edge on No. 10. Faced with an estimated 185-yard blind approach into a crosswind, Hanson’s recovery shot found the right side of the green, from where he two-putted to preserve the one-stroke victory at 1-under for the tournament. Kumar’s even-par final tally earned him second place, while Hanson’s Virginia Tech teammate, Connor Johnson Jr., finished in third place at 1-over par.

Fobes’ short par putt on 18 cemented her one-stroke victory over North Carolina State’s Isabel Amezcua, who also shot 69 to stay in contention throughout the day. Fobes (-4 for the tournament) and Amezcua (-3) were the only women’s players to finish under par after 54 holes. Fobes’ UNCW teammate, Deborah Spair, finished tied for third along with East Carolina’s Dorthea Forbrigd.

The Golfweek Myrtle Beach Amateur field represented a complete cross-section of college golf’s competitive landscape that included players from NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NJCAA and NAIA schools, with 50 men and 23 women teeing it up this week.
