Watson Claims Second PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com South Carolina Open Championship in Three Years

Derek Watson, PGA of Carolina Golf Sales in Myrtle Beach, SC, rallied from five shots back at the start of final-round play in the 70th PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com South Carolina Open to win the event by two strokes Wednesday at TPC Myrtle Beach.

Watson’s 3-under par score of 69 gave him a final event tally of 5-under 139, two strokes clear of second-place finisher Tommy Gibson, PGA of Old Town Club in Winston Salem, NC. Brock Elder, PGA of Forest Oaks CC in Greensboro, NC and amateur Robert Lutomski of Simpsonville, SC finished tied for third at 1-under.

Final-round play began with concerns of inclement weather impacting the event, but it concluded without delay. Tough wind conditions allowed just three competitors to card second-round scores under par, with Watson among them. Starting the day in sixth place with a five-shot deficit, Watson came charging out of the gate with birdies on Nos. 1 and 3 and eagle on No. 2, setting a pace that the rest of the field would not match.

The victory is Watson’s second in three years in this event; he won the 2019 South Carolina Open at Grande Dunes Resort Course, also by two strokes.
