World Am Press Conference, Day 1: Spanning the Globe, and Tales of Sextuple Bogeys on Par 3s

The 19th Hole press conference after Round 1 play at the PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com World Amateur brought nations together (United States, Australia and Montenegro), and included players fighting for the top spot in their respective flights. No so much for a Southern general’s namesake, whose par 3 adventures today took his score well north of par.

Victor Ferreira, Arizona:
I played at the Founders Club (at Pawleys Island) today, in Pawleys Island. Great course. Great course, great condition and I played real well. I shot a 74.Yeah, I’m leading by one stroke after the first round, 74 there’s a couple 75s out there, and a handful of 76s and 77s.

You know, I’m going to play aggressive like I did today. I feel like I’m swinging the club real well. I’m putting very well, which was the secret sauce for today. So, I’m going to play aggressive, but on some of the holes, if I find myself in trouble, I’ll play smart, I won’t try to be heroic.

Steve Muller, Australia:
We played at Long Bay. I shot a 92, so I was four over, had a pretty, I had some, couple of birdies, but I had four bad holes, anyway. I’m tied for 12th. Yeah, I’m at nine shots off the lead, early days. Tomorrow, I’m at Sea Trail - Jones, and I’ve played there on Saturday in the skins game, so I now got a bit of an advantage.

Robert E. Lee, North Carolina:
We had a great time, great round. I had good 40, 42 on the back, but on the front, have you ever had a nine on a par three before?

Speaker 4:
What happened with your tee shot?

Robert E. Lee:
On the par three? It was short.

Speaker 4:
And what about your second shot?

Robert E. Lee:
In the bunker.

Speaker 4:
Third shot?

Robert E. Lee:
In the bunker.

Speaker 4:
Fourth shot?

Robert E. Lee:
In the bunker.

Speaker 4:
Fifth shot?

Robert E. Lee:
I hit it out backwards.

Speaker 4:
Sixth shot?

Robert E. Lee:
Over the green.

Speaker 4:
Seventh shot?

Robert E. Lee:
Close.

Speaker 4:
Eighth shot?

Robert E. Lee:
Two-putt for nine, baby. Yeah!

Ramadan Ibric, Montenegro:
I actually was about to go and see what I’m standing on. But I played at (Shaftesbury Glen).

Speaker 6:
Shaftesbury.

Ramadan Ibric:
Very nice course.

Speaker 6:
What did you shoot?

Ramadan Ibric:
82. (Tomorrow) I’m playing at TPC Myrtle Beach. I heard it’s a very nice course, so I’m looking forward.

Michael Katz, Arizona:
I played at Lion's Paw. I played pretty good, except for three holes, got a couple of bad bounces, but I’m in the top 20 so I’m pretty happy. A good round tomorrow, I’ll get right back towards the top. You know, I’m just going out and having fun. You know, let the chips fall where they may. I’m here to make birdies and you know, whatever, so you know, it is what it is. So, I’m throwing caution to the wind.

Lindy Sullivan, West Virginia:
I started bogey, triple, bogey, bogey, and then on the back nine, I shot even. Number two, I was in the bunker and got stuck and then it embedded into the face of the bunker. I had to take an unplayable. More consistency off the tee, probably. I mean, or actually continue with what I did in the back nine today.
