Part of the joy of golf is enjoying the picturesque landscapes it so often provides during the course of a round. Along the Grand Strand the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) plays a role in helping to set the scene at several locations, including the Norman Course at Barefoot Resort & Golf in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.
We asked James Gillespie, PGA, Head Golf Professional at Barefoot Resort & Golf, to offer up his top choices for scenery along the property’s Greg Norman signature design. Sure enough, the ICW plays anywhere from a minor to a major role in each.
Gillespie’s picks include:

Hole 9 – “This par 5 is a great hole with a creek running up the entire right side of the hole, which then cuts in front of the green at roughly 40-50 yards, depending on the angle,” says Gillespie. “Players will need to hit very solid tee shots in order to get home in two. There are some framing bunkers surrounding the green, and the Intracoastal is in the background.”

Hole 10 – Gillespie identifies this one as the signature par 3 hole of the Norman Course. “An elevated tee box with strong winds off of the Intracoastal Waterway requires a demanding shot,” he says. “Guests will have a great look at the Waterway from the tee box and it provides a good opportunity for some pictures.”

Hole 16 – Per Gillespie, “This is another great par 3 with the Waterway located behind the green and a small creek that runs up the left side. The tee boxes are elevated and there are nice homes as well as condos surrounding both sides of the hole.”
