During its boom years, there were architects who designed a career’s worth of courses in Myrtle Beach, but some of the area’s most prominent layouts are the work of architects who made just one stop along the Grand Strand.

This week Rob Spallone was in the heart of The Beach once more to check out Wild Wing, Man O’ War and The Wizard, while Joe Novak headed north to get some shots at Oyster Bay. General Manager Bob Zuercher and Superintendent Andy Traynham of Blackmoor Golf Club in Murrells Inlet, S.C., share their thoughts as the Grand Strand’s lone Gary Player signature design concludes an intensive, 5 1/2-month drainage improvement project that has dramatically improved the course’s ability to bounce back quickly from rainfall events.

For the past 23 years Dan Morphet, owner of one of the Grand Strand’s popular package companies Golf The Carolinas, has run the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Golf Classic to support the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund in Washington, D.C. The Memorial Fund is dedicated to telling the story of American law enforcement through exhibits in the Memorial Museum, and honoring our fallen officers.

Tom Fazio’s list of accomplishments is lengthy and his two Myrtle Beach golf courses, TPC Myrtle Beach and the Fazio Course at Barefoot Resort, certainly helped burnish his lofty reputation. Both layouts have been ranked among “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses” by Golf Digest and have served as the centerpiece of countless golf trips.
