Charlie Rymer Visits Glen Dornoch Waterway Golf Links

PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com’s Charlie Rymer recently stopped by Glen Dornoch Waterway Golf Links in Little River, S.C., and got a playing tour from Head Golf Professional Ben Acre of its famous par-3 17th Hole, situated scenically along the Intracoastal Waterway.

Charlie Rymer:
So, I’m with Ben here at beautiful Glen Dornoch. We’re just inside of the state of South Carolina. What are we, maybe a mile or so from the state line?

Ben Acre:
About a mile. Yes sir. North Carolina is just across the border. It’s right here.

Charlie:
Well, we’ve got a beautiful day here. We don’t have any humidity. The first thing I notice when I look at your golf course here, Glen Dornoch, the conditioning. This thing is absolutely perfect. I know you’ve got to be really proud of that.

Ben:
Yes, sir. We’re extremely proud. Our maintenance staff does an excellent job and this year is no different. We’ve just put in new Champion bermudagrass greens last summer and these things have come in and they are looking fantastic right now.

Charlie:
If you haven’t putted on Champion bermudagrass, you’ve got to give it a shot. It is smooth. It’s like me, it’s smooth.

Tell me a little bit about this golf course. It’s not a golf course that stretches out to 7,500 yards, but it’s a golf course in a beautiful spot and it’s got a lot of character.

Ben:
Right. It does have a lot of character and a lot of that comes from being right here, our location, right on the Intracoastal Waterway. We have five holes that are either on the Waterway or back right up to it. So, you’ve got beautiful views. But not just the views, we also have a great golf course. It’s not an overly long golf course, but it doesn’t need to be. This is more of a shot placement course. So, you’ve got to kind of think your way around the golf course. Don’t just get up there and swing away. It’ll get you in trouble.

Charlie:
Well, your finishing holes are spectacular: 16, 17 and 18. We’re going to play 17 right now. Before I get you to hit your tee ball for me here, tell me a little bit about this par three.

Ben:
So, this par three we’re playing is 212 yards from the tips. We’ve got a beautiful backdrop to the Intracoastal Waterway. Now, Charlie, what you’ll notice on the right side of this green, we have a bulkhead bunker. So, it’s visually intimidating. Because of the bunker, you’ve got the marsh that’s right in front. You also have the marsh that is to the left and behind the green. Again, like I said before, it’s a shot placement course. You definitely need to place your shot in the right spot here.

Charlie:
Well, lets see you place it in the right shot. Right spot.

Ben:
Let’s do it.

Charlie:
That looks pretty darn good right there, if it was a flag stick you’re aiming at.

Ben:
That might be the flag stick. All right.

Charlie:
I love it.

Ben:
Thank you sir.

Charlie:
That’s first take too folks, by the way. It’s hard to hold back talent, isn’t it?

Ben:
Good looking …

Charlie:
I think we might have two on the green.

Ben:
Yes sir.

Charlie:
I’ll take those.

Ben:
Absolutely.

Charlie:
So, Ben I see the bulkhead bunker you’re talking about. Really a distinctive bunker there.

Ben:
Absolutely. It adds a lot of character to this hole. I see we both missed that bulkhead bunker and the pot bunkers that I did not tell you about.

Charlie:
Yeah. He’s not bragging because he almost made a one, right in there behind the hole. I got about 40 feet over here. You go work on your birdie putt.

Ben:
There’s nothing to it. You got this.

Charlie:
I’ll work on mine.

Ben:
Keep coming. Good out, Charlie.

Charlie:
All right. Go ahead. Let’s see that two.

Ben:
Made it.

Ben:
Appreciate the hospitality. Thank you very much.

Charlie:
Thank you, Charlie. Thanks for coming out. Hope you enjoyed it.

Ben:
Ah, you’ve got a beautiful spot here. It was a real pleasure.

Charlie:
Thank you sir.
