Charlie’s Corner: Rymer Gets Robbed, Reminded of his Good Fortune

March 16, 2010

CharlieRymer_2009.jpgI just realized how incredibly spoiled I am when it comes to golf.

Last week I played my first ever round of golf with rental clubs.  My clubs were swiped from my car the day before a round so I had to go with the clubs the golf course had available.

The theft occurred in my own driveway (in Florida).

For most folks, and round of golf with rentals wouldn’t be a big deal, but keep in mind that I am not a normal size human being.  I am 6’4” and top the scales at a number significantly above 185 pounds.  My clubs are an inch and a half long, super extra stiff, and the grips are as thick as sausages.

The same thief that stole my clubs also ran off with a pair of my size fifteen golf shoes.  The beautiful irony in all this is that these clubs and shoes will be totally useless to the thief or whoever ends up with them.

They also got my GPS and it has a theft deterrent code.  The thief will be able to use the GPS only as a doorstop, the clubs as bar bells, and the shoes will make lovely his and hers kayaks.

In fact, if you see someone navigating a river in Florida with a Garmin GPS in an Adidas 360 Tour golf shoe using a Rossa Itsy Bitsy putter as a rutter, please alert the authorities.

Since I was 18 years old I’ve had access to the latest in golf technology that was expertly fitted for me.  This is something that I’ve very much taken for granted over the years.  In my round with the rentals I had to drastically alter my swing and set up.  It was almost like I had never played before.

While most golfers are a little closer to “normal” in their physical characteristics than I am, I still think taking the time to work with a professional fitter is a wise investment.  Having fitted clubs gives you the opportunity to play your best golf.
