Ask the Pro: 3 Most Challenging Holes at Barefoot-Fazio

He’s had different takes on different traits of his resort’s Greg Norman and Davis Love III designs. On this occasion James Gillespie, PGA Head Golf Professional at Barefoot Resort & Golf, is back to offer his thoughts on the three most challenging holes at its Tom Fazio signature layout.

Hole 2 – The Fazio Course’s number 1 handicap hole is a challenging par 4 that tends to play long, regardless of the tee box. “There are some sandy areas through the green that make it a challenging driving hole,” Gillespie explains, “and then players are usually left with a lengthy approach shot into a green that is protected by bunkers.”

Hole 5 – The number 3 handicap hole at Fazio is another long par 4. “The tee boxes are slightly elevated with water on the right and bunkers on the left for an intimidating tee shot,” says Gillespie. “The green is also protected by bunkers for shots that are short, and there is plenty of fescue for shots that miss to the right.”

Hole 18 – While this hole is only the 12th handicap-rated hole, Gillespie notes that Fazio’s finishing hole remains quite demanding. “Tee shots to the right of the fairway will find a wooded area while shots to the left of the fairway will typically end up in the water,” he says. “The approach shot is uphill to a slightly elevated green with more bunkers protecting the green short. The water feature on the left side of the hole wraps all the way around the back side of the green, and players who are too aggressive with a back pin placement may find the water.

“Walking away with a par on any of these holes is a great score!”
