Davis Love III Calls Upon His Carolina Roots for His Course at Barefoot Resort

The Love Course at Barefoot Resort

The Love Course at Barefoot Resort – designed by the Lowcountry’s own Davis Love III, exemplifies his Carolina roots. Here you’ll find wide open fairways, generous landing areas and some good scoring opportunities. Many of the green complexes are reminiscent of those at Pinehurst, with the added flavor of #2 thrown in for good measure. That “Carolina” feel continues outside the parameters of the playing field; between the 3rd and 7th hole, you will find replicated ruins of an old antebellum plantation, adding to the Lowcountry feel and giving you a sense that there is more to this place than just a great Myrtle Beach golf course.

Most Memorable Hole: Number 18, Par 5, 534 yards (White Tees).

The story goes that, during play of the inaugural round at his newly designed course, Davis Love III noticed that the green was not positioned in the same place as on the original plans. After conferring with his playing partners as they stood over their approach shots on 18, the call was made and shortly thereafter work began on moving the green to where it is today.

Number 18 is a daunting par 5 that demands accuracy – and length – off the tee for the opportunity to get home in two. The green is not visible from the tee box; nor is much of the trouble that lies ahead on the left side. Favoring the right side of the fairway off the tee leaves the best angle to an elevated green and gives you more green to work with. The green is well guarded with sand traps dotting the landscape from about 90 yards in on the right and a large lake on the left. Should you choose to layup, favor the right side of the fairway as it starts to drop off to the water. This is a hole that stays with you over time.

Barefoot Resort is a complete golf resort with a fully stocked pro shop, restaurants and the area’s best practice facilities. You could spend all day at the practice facility – literally. There’s a restaurant there!
