Dustin Johnson on his love of St Andrews and Wild Weather at the British Open

July 9, 2015

Dustin Johnson is looking forward to the Open ChampionshipHere is more of our interview with DJ as the fourth-ranked player in the world discusses links golf and why he loves the Open Championship.

What do you like about the British Open rotation courses?
It’s not the same golf (over there). You really have to use your imagination. You really have to use the golf course. You have to roll the ball a lot of times; sometimes you have to fly it up. From 100 yards you can hit 10 different shots to get it close to the hole. It’s a lot of fun to play because we don’t get to do that in the States very much, where it is more just hit it here and hit it there. Over there you use a lot of feel. You have to play the wind.

How early you go over for the British Open?
I usually get over there Thursday or Friday the week before to get used to the time. I go to Dublin with some friends and play golf, get acclimated over there. It’s always a lot of fun.

How do you handle the mental challenges of the Open and the impact weather can have?
Over there the tee times go from such a wide range and the weather can change instantly. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don’t. There is nothing you can do about it. You aren’t the only one playing it at your time. So everyone else has to deal with it too.

Much has been made of the year’s last three majors being on links style courses. Is that something you look forward to?
Whistling is not a links style course. Whistling Straits is in the dunes and it looks linksy but it doesn’t play linksy, but it’s a great golf course. With it being on Lake Michigan it looks like it could be in Scotland or Ireland, but over here, it’s really tough to get the ground to bounce and play like it does over there. It does have that look to it though. It’s a great golf course that I played well last time we were there. I look forward to going back.

St Andrews is a true links. It’s my favorite place to play an Open. The town is great  the golf course is fantastic. I really enjoy it.
I can’t imagine anyone not liking going to St. Andrews for an Open.
