Five Things You Need to Know About Lion’s Paw

March 12, 2012

Lion's Paw was the first course at Ocean Ridge, a Myrtle Beach golf favorite1. Lion’s Paw opened to rave reviews in 1991, collecting up to 4-stars in “Golf Digest’s Best Places to Play guide,” and it’s success helped pave the way for the three courses that followed.  Speaking of the paving the way …

2. Tim Cate co-designed Lion’s Paw along with Willard Byrd, and based, at least partially, on the quality of his work was contracted to design the ensuing three courses on the property. Lion’s Paw launched Ocean Ridge and the architecture career of Tim Cate, who has quietly emerged as one of the nation’s best.

3. What’s needed for success at Lion’s Paw? Find the fairway and the par 4s are manageable, take advantage of the par 5s, and hold your breath on the par 3s. The one-shotters at Lion’s Paw all feature water and forced carries, so make sure you are swinging your mid-irons well.

4. The course might be 21 years old, but this is one Lion that’s not long in the tooth. Like many Myrtle Beach golf courses, Lion’s Paw made the conversion to MiniVerde Bermuda grass greens last summer and the layout remains vibrant and challenging.

5. While Ocean Ridge is a residential community and golf development, homes typically don’t encroach on the courses and that’s certainly the case at Lion’s Paw. Don’t believe us? Ask the bald eagle that lives on the third hole and the assortment of other native wildlife that call the property home. Don’t be shocked if the eagle swoops down to pluck and unsuspecting fish out of the water on the third-hole pond!
