Five Things You Need to Know About River Hills Golf Club

October 15, 2013

River Hills is a quiet starRiver Hills, a Tom Jackson design, is a prime example of why Myrtle Beach is the game’s most popular destination.

Beyond a good layout, superior conditions and great customer service, what can you expect at River Hills?

We take a look at five things you need to know about this quiet star.

1. There are no parallel holes at River Hills, so you feel like yours is the only group on the course.

2. A Myrtle Beach golf trip typically means flat coastal terrain, but the property at River Hills is the exception. There is nearly 40 feet of (natural) elevation change on the 18th hole alone. The rolling nature of the land is also apparent on ninth, 14th and 16th holes, providing the course a unique feel among area layouts.

3.  River Hills was one of the first area layouts to transition to Champion ultradwarf bermuda greens, paving the way for the cavalcade of courses that have followed suit. The greens at River Hills are small by contemporary standards, but the putting surfaces are outstanding 12 months a year.

4. You may have seen River Hills featured on the Golf Channel reality show “Chasing the Dream.” Aspiring Tour player Robbie Biershenk competed in a mini-tour event at River Hills with the Golf Channel cameras in-tow. Biershenk loved the course, particularly the back nine, and you will, too.

5. When you arrive at River Hills, expect a firm but fair challenge. The course was softened in 2002, enhancing its playability. There are four sets of tees ranging from 5,030 yards to 6,918, make sure you choose the right set.
