Five Things You Need to Know About the Heathland Course at Legends Resort

September 17, 2012

Heathland, Legends Resort, Myrtle Beach golfHeathland has been a Myrtle Beach golf favorite since its 1990 opening, wowing players with its playability and beauty. Before you tee it up on one of the only true links style courses in the area, here are five things you need to know.

1. Tom Doak has grown into one the game’s preeminent architects and he launched his career with the design of Heathland. The course was Doak’s introduction to the golf world and it was a spectacular one.

2. Heathland isn’t a true, seaside links course like those in the British Open rota, but it’s as close as you will get along the Eastern seaboard. With runway wide fairways, complete with substantial undulation, and massive greens flanked by pot bunkers, Heathland provides players an enjoyable links style golf course.

3. As mentioned early, the greens are very large, so long putts are the norm. The 17th green offers the possibility of a 162-foot putt!! Make sure you work on lag putting on the practice green and don’t get discouraged by a three-putt or two.

4. Use your imagination. On most modern golf courses, the formula is the same: driver, fly an iron onto the green and hopefully two putt. Players can play a much greater variety of shots on Heathland, including the bump-and-run, so take advantage of the opportunity. There are a lot of ways to get the ball in the hole, a big reason Heathland has long been a Myrtle Beach golf favorite.

5. The course isn’t a pushover but it does give players a chance to score. That being said, don’t arrive at the 16th tee expecting to turn your day around. Holes 16 through 18 – a long a par 3 sandwiched between two meaty par 4s – are the course’s toughest test.

“We give you the first 15 holes to make birdies,” Legends head pro Matt Biddington said with a laugh.

A day at Heathland is a birdie for any group on a Myrtle Beach golf trip.
