The two-man teams of Greg Lee and Don Rich and Steven Jones and Jim Thiesing took home flight division titles Wednesday to wrap up a successful Myrtle Beach Preseason Classic, held Jan. 28-30, 2019 at six Grand Strand area courses.
The Lee/Rich team captured its flight with a three-round net score of -10, with rounds played at Eagle Nest, the Love Course at Barefoot Resort and the Heathland Course at Legends Golf Resort.
The Jones/Thiesing pairing won its flight by three strokes with a net score of -9, with their rounds contested at Wachesaw Plantation East, Glen Dornoch and Litchfield Country Club.
“I thought it was a great event. It’s great every year,” said Lee, having just completed his fifth year participating in the Preseason Classic, in addition to the Father Son Team Classic and the Veterans Classic. “They’re all great tournaments. The staff that runs them is fantastic, and gives golfers the best courses available. I’ve been living (in the Myrtle Beach area) for 15 years now, and there’s nothing that compares to these tournaments.”
“These tournaments are great because you meet lots of different folks,” added Thiesing. “And the courses are so diverse that there’s a challenge around every corner.”
Thiesing and Jones especially appreciated the temporary escape this tournament provided from the extreme winter conditions their Northern Indiana home front is currently experiencing. Lee also lauded the unique opportunity the Preseason Classic offers for a quality January golfing experience along the Grand Strand.
“Myrtle Beach golf in the wintertime is something that everyone in the country can come down and play,” Lee said. “You get great discounts on tee times, the courses are always in great shape, and the restaurants and hotels in this area really know how to take care of their guests.”
