This View Makes No. 5 on Arrowhead’s Waterway 9 Unforgettable

September 11, 2017

Those are ingredients to make Arrowhead Country Club one of the area’s most popular courses, and the layout enjoys much acclaim, particularly among locals. But for too many golf groups, the facility is hiding in plain sight.

The course is just five miles from Myrtle Beach International Airport and it’s less than two miles off Highway 501, the primary artery into the area. But it isn’t visible from the road. Golfers are well served to take the time to find Arrowhead, home of the Lakes, Cypress and Waterway nines.

All three nines are of equal architectural value, and Arrowhead is one of six area layouts that play along the Intracoastal. Our Myrtle Beach Golf Hole of the Week offers a tee-to-green view of the Waterway.

No. 5, Waterway – Arrowhead Country Club
Yardage: 387 yards (blue tees), 356 yards (white tees), 325 yards (greens tees), 297 yards (red tees)
Handicap: 3

Widely regarded as Arrowhead’s signature hole, the fifth on the Waterway nine plays just yards above the Intracoastal, providing players an idyllic view of the Army Corps of Engineers’ handy work.

Water is in play off the tee for shots that are pulled, but seven bunkers scattered along the hole present a much greater challenge. Sand flanks both sides of the fairway and a trio of bunkers in front of the green precludes the possibility of running the ball up.

Length isn’t an issue at 356 yards from the white tees, but greater priority should be placed on precision as opposed to power. An approach from the short grass is a recipe for par, but players that find one of the fairway bunkers could find themselves on a path to a big number.

Enjoy a beautiful hole along the Intracoastal, but don’t lose concentration and post a big number.
