James Madison, Troy Cruise to Victory at 2023 Golfweek/AGT Intercollegiate at True Blue & Caledonia
James Madison University was a model of consistency in the women’s field while Troy University dominated the men’s division as each school took home first-place honors this week in the 2023 Golfweek/AGT Intercollegiate at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club and True Blue Golf Club.
Kendall Turner (-1 for the tournament, 2nd place individual) and Kate Owens (+1, T3 individual) paced JMU with top-5 individual performances as the Dukes finished 17 shots clear of second-place UNC Greensboro, and 19 shots better than third-place UNC Asheville. The men of Troy (-25) had four players record top-10 individual finishes, led by Jake Springer (T2, -7), Jason Quinlan (T2, -7), Brantley Scott (T5, -5) and Nicklas Borrmann (T9, -3), in cruising to a 22-stroke victory over Delaware. Connecticut finished third at 2-under.
Connecticut’s Jared Nelson (-9) earned top individual honors in men’s play at True Blue, while Coastal Carolina’s Sara Sarrion (-5) claimed the women’s individual title as one of only two players to finish the 54-hole tournament at Caledonia with a score under par.

The 2023 Golfweek/AGT Intercollegiate was contested at each of Mike Strantz’s two Myrtle Beach-area designs rated by Golfweek as among America’s “Top 100 Courses You Can Play.” The 54-hole competition included five schools (Northern Colorado, Marshall, Evansville, Ohio, Western Illinois) competing in both divisions.
Xavier, Valparaiso, High Point, Austin Peay, Winthrop, Jacksonville State, Central Arkansas, Wichita State, Southern Illinois, and Loyola-Chicago rounded out the men’s field while Florida-Gulf Coast, East Carolina, North Dakota State, Illinois-Chicago, Coastal Carolina, Morehead State, Akron, Gardner-Webb, and St. Thomas competed in the women’s division.
True Blue and Caledonia have been longstanding host courses of Golfweek collegiate competitions and are two of four Myrtle Beach-area courses whose layouts provide regular tests to NCAA competitors. The Dunes Golf & Beach Club annually hosts the General Hackler Championship, while TPC Myrtle Beach is a former Hackler Championship venue that most recently hosted the Myrtle Beach Regional of the 2019 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship.
