Myrtle Beach Golf Spokesman Dustin Johnson Opens 2013 With 7th PGA Tour Victory

January 9, 2013

Myrtle Beach golf spokesman Dustin Johnson opened 2013 with a winMyrtle Beach golf spokesman Dustin Johnson is expecting big things in 2013, and one tournament into the season, there is every reason to believe he is going to deliver.

Johnson powered his way to a 4-shot victory at the PGA Tour’s season-opening Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii, finishing the 54-hole event at 16-under par.

The Plantation Course at Kapalua sets up perfectly for Johnson, allowing one of the longest hitters in the world to bomb his driver. Save for a double bogey on the 13th hole, the result of a wayward drive that cut his lead to a stroke, DJ was in control throughout.

The mistake at 13 was quickly erased with a chip-in for eagle at the short, par 4 14th, allowing Johnson to cruise to his seventh career PGA Tour victory. Johnson has at least one win in each of his first six years on Tour, the longest streak since Tiger Woods.

One of the game’s most talented players, Johnson was able to pierce the Maui winds and bring Kapalua to its knees. He played the Plantation Course’s five par 5s in 8-under during the second round, taking control of the tournament.

Johnson took a three-shot lead into the final round and never relinquished it. The finish of the Tournament of Champions was pushed back by a day and the event was shortened due to high winds and rain that plagued Maui.

With the win, Johnson, a Coastal Carolina alum and a long-time Myrtle Beach resident, begins a season he hopes will propel him back into the top 10 in the Official World Golf Rankings and see him contend for his first major championship.

Johnson, who lived along the Grand Strand for nearly a decade, became the official spokesman for Myrtle Beach golf in the spring of 2011. Even before becoming Golf Holiday’s spokesman, Johnson was an unofficial ambassador for the community.
