Myrtle Beach Hosting Inaugural Can Am Cup Golf Tournament This Week

A little competition on the golf course never hurt anyone, right? In fact, competition fuels camaraderie and enthusiasm for the game – and we’re in for a friendly dose of it this week as 24 golfers square off in the inaugural Myrtle Beach Can Am Cup Golf Tournament at Barefoot Resort & Golf.

The Can Am Cup is a Ryder Cup-style golf match, featuring two 12-man teams competing not only for individual glory, but also for the pride of their home countries.

The four-round event was created to bring Canadian and American golfers together for some friendly competition, and to escape the colder northern climates these golfers call home. Selecting “The Golf Capital of the World” was a no-brainer for event organizer Dave Struthers.

“Myrtle Beach is a great golf destination with great golf, and Barefoot Resort is one of the best resorts,” said Struthers. “We thought this event would be a great way to cross-promote tourism within the market.”

Each 12-man roster was built from the recruiting efforts of their respective captains.

American captains Carl and Dennis Paulson, former PGA TOUR professionals (they’re not related) who host “Inside the Ropes” on SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio, created a team of friends, radio listeners and colleagues to build their roster.

On the Canadian side, captains Mark Zecchino, radio host for Golf Talk Canada TV & Radio, and Dave Hemstad, a Canadian comedian, utilized their influence in Canada to create a team worthy of competing against the ex-TOUR player-led American squad.

The competition is slated for four rounds – one round on each of the four Barefoot courses – with the winning team hoisting the Can Am Cup trophy Saturday evening.

When asked which country would come out on top at the conclusion of the event, Struthers was quick with his reply:

“Canada!”

Only time will tell, Dave!
