Prestwick Country Club Begins Front Nine Renovations

Last year, Prestwick Country Club redid the bulkheads around holes 9, 16 and 18. Now they’re beginning work on holes 4 and 5 to replace these failing bulkheads. We caught up with General Manager Jay Smith to talk about the project.

Jay Smith:
Well, as you alluded to, a couple of years ago we did work on 16, which is a par three, and the two holes right here, 9 and 18. And the seawalls were failing on those holes and we’re having that same issue on 4 green and 5 green. So December 14th, we’ll be shutting down the front 9 and a marine company that does nothing but build docks, that kind of work, will come in and tear the old wall out and put the new wall in and upgrade those two holes. And we’re going to fix some drainage in there and make them look pretty just like 9 and 18 do behind me.

They’re going to start moving in their equipment early next week and they’re going to start on number 4. And what they’ll do first is they’ll tear out the old wall on number 4, along with taking out the dead men that are buried in the green, which kind of holds the wall up. And once they get all that out, they’ll rebuild a whole brand new wall. Once the wall’s done, they’ll backfill all the extra space that we pick up. Once they’re done with number 4, they’ll move to number 5 and basically do the same thing.

Hopefully we’ll be open by February 1st. Golf as usual, all 18 holes will be open. 4 and 5 will look great. Those new walls should be beautiful, but the golf course should be in excellent shape. Greens will be a little speedy as always, we’re kind of known for that. But the golf course will be in great shape, overseeded and be ready for spring golf.
