How Several Holes at Pawleys Plantation Will Look After Extensive Renovation

Join us for a visual pre-renovation tour of several of the holes that will receive dramatic makeovers as part of the extensive project underway at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Pawleys Plantation Golf & Country Club in Pawleys Island, S.C.

Max Morgan is vice president of agronomy at Founders Group International, the company that owns and operates Pawleys Plantation as part of FGI’s 21-course portfolio. He’s overseeing the extensive on-course renovations now underway at Pawleys Plantation, and we asked him to offer up some of the top highlights of the work that will be completed later this fall.

The photos below show the holes that Max chose to highlight for us, each in its pre-renovation state, with details Max has provided on how different they’ll look.

The large fairway bunker down the right side of No. 1 will be removed and replaced with turf or, in some spots, native areas.

The area around No. 1 tee box will be reconfigured, with a more attractive pond element added.

The large fairway bunker down the left side of No. 2 will be removed and replaced with turf or, in some spots, native areas.

The large bunker along the water’s edge of No. 3 will be removed and replaced with turf or, in some spots, native areas.

The large fairway bunker along the water’s edge of No. 6 will be removed and replaced with turf or, in some spots, native areas.

The large bunker running up the right side of No. 7 will be removed and replaced with turf or, in some spots, native areas. About 20 percent more putting surface will be added, and an area traditionally susceptible to excess shade will be replaced with one in a more sun-exposed area.

The large fairway bunker running up the right side of No. 8 will be removed and replaced with turf or, in some spots, native areas. The water will also run closer to the green here to create more challenge.

The large fairway bunker along the right side of No. 12 will be removed and replaced with turf and well-placed, traditional fairway bunkers.

The putting surface at No. 13 will be expanded by about 20 percent to create a new cuppable area on a small green.

The large fairway bunker running up to and along the right side of No. 16 will be removed and replaced with turf or, in some spots, native areas.

No. 18 will movie its men’s regular tee to the right, and clean up the edge of the marsh to create a more exciting element to this finishing hole. The fairway bunkering along the left side will be removed and replace with turf or, in some spots, native areas, and the water’s edge will be moved closer to the green to create more challenge.

Throughout the course, the expansion of Pawleys Plantation’s greens to their original size will restore about 33 percent more puttable surface. Its new bunkers will be lined with capillary concrete, a modern washout prevention measure which will offer more consistent playing conditions on a day-to-day basis.
