TPC Myrtle Beach Remains Among America’s Best Courses

December 15, 2016

The Tom Fazio-Lanny Wadkins co-design hosted the Senior PGA Tour Championship in 2000, an event ultimately won by Tom Watson, and has also been home to high-profile college events, the Myrtle Beach World Amateur Handicap Championship’s Flight Winners’ Playoff, and, most recently, the Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship

But what TPC has drawn the most acclaim for hosting is golf trips. The layout has been ranked among America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses and serves as the centerpiece layout for countless Myrtle Beach golf trips each year.

Having recently played the course, I can tell you, unequivocally, the golf course has never been better.

Three things to expect when you play TPC Myrtle Beach:

The 18th at TPC is one of the course's signature holes
Superior Golf Course Playing Conditions

TPC overseeds from wall-to-wall, including the rough, and the results are spectacular. Golfers see nothing but green when standing on the tee, even during the winter months, and that’s an enticing look.

For the record, there is absolutely nothing wrong with dormant grass and many players love the contrast provided by overseeded fairways and dormant rough in the winter and early spring months. But there is no doubting the attraction of green grass, particularly if you’ve endured a harsh northeast or Midwest winter.

Throw in near perfect greens, and TPC Myrtle Beach is better than it has ever been.

A Dynamic Duo

Listen, the layout is strong from beginning to end, but both closing holes at TPC stand out on a high-quality golf course. The par 3 17th, with a peninsula green, is reminiscent of TPC Sawgrass, and the 18th is a great risk-reward par 5.

As you stand on the 17th tee, knowing a great round is coming to an end, a tee shot that is at the same time exhilarating and anxiety inducing awaits.

The green is plenty wide but the hole plays a healthy 158 yards from the white tees. You don’t have to hit a great shot to avoid the water, but average may not save you from a watery grave!

The 18th, which has water running along the right side on the first part of the hole and a lake that awaits on the left down the stretch, has determined more than a few matches. Playing 496 yards from the white tees, really long hitters may have a chance to reach the green in two, but there is little margin for error.

There may not be a better finishing stretch along the Myrtle Beach golf scene.

Follow in the footsteps of DJ

TPC Myrtle Beach also enjoys the distinction of being golf superstar Dustin Johnson’s long-time home course. DJ used to own a house on the course and practiced at TPC for several years after he joined the Tour. His fingerprints remain on the course as it’s the home of the Dustin Johnson Golf School, and he displays memorabilia from his time on Tour. Make sure you leave time to tour the clubhouse and enjoy what amounts to a timeline of DJ’s career.
