Byrd was one of the most prolific golf course architects of his era, cranking out over 100 designs across his career. But what really set him apart wasn’t the quantity — it was the vibe. Byrd built courses that were fun, fair, and flat-out enjoyable to play. No ego trips. No “let’s punish the average golfer” nonsense. Just great golf.

And lucky for us, six of his best are right here on the Grand Strand.

As the restoration of the Avocet Course at Wild Wing kicks into high gear this summer, it has General Manager Mark Andrews thinking of multiple “bests” and “mosts” that he knows will remain a constant at the Jeff Brauer/Larry Nelson collaborative design. With that in mind he weighed in on three topics: Wild Wing’s three best holes, its three most challenging holes, and the three things that make the property unique.
