When Peter Seibel started coming to the area, Myrtle Beach had 26 courses, by his estimate, and the World Am was born in 1984. Over the years, he became increasingly aware of the tournament, but, for whatever the reasons, Seibel never took the plunge. But a golf towel changed everything.

Monday’s festivities at “The World’s Largest 19th Hole,” the daily post-round gathering of thousands at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center to celebrate the PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com World Amateur, included an all-star lineup of golf media personalities.

The 19th Hole press conference after Round 1 play at the PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com World Amateur brought nations together (United States, Australia and Montenegro), and included players fighting for the top spot in their respective flights. No so much for a Southern general’s namesake, whose par 3 adventures today took his score well north of par.

First-round competition at the 36th Annual PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com World Amateur included flights contested by the women at Dan Maples’ Willbrook Plantation. Check out photos from today’s action at this popular South Strand design.

This year, the PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com World Amateur has been following three golfers as they pair up with top golf instructors from across the country to improve their game leading up to the World Am. Those golfers – Jaime Costanzo and Jason Miller, each taught by Michael Breed; and Gene Chiarella, paired with Allen Terrell of the Dustin Johnson Golf School – checked in with us on the eve of competition, sharing their thoughts on what theyr anticipating heading into Round 1.

Beautiful weather greeted the 3,215 golfers participating in the 36th Annual PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com World Amateur Handicap Championship Monday morning as they began their quest to claim the mantle of World Champion.

It was August of 1997 and Wayne Faulkner was in Myrtle Beach for his first World Amateur Handicap Championship. He had seen the tournament advertised in magazines and always wanted to play. The Minnesota native convinced his wife, Cindy, they’d meet people and have a good time, so they took the plunge.

Jeff Stapleton was the first player through the registration line Saturday morning at the North Myrtle Beach PGA TOUR Superstore, collecting his gift bag and officially launching the 2019 PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com World Amateur Handicap Championship.
