The 3 Best Holes at Blackmoor: Ask the Pro with Brian Boggs

This edition of “Ask the Pro” takes us to Murrells Inlet and Blackmoor Golf Club, the area’s lone Gary Player signature design with a variety of creative holes to its credit. Blackmoor Head Golf Professional Brian Boggs, PGA has his own thoughts on three that stand out not only as the design’s best, but that also present unique challenges.

Boggs’ choices of top holes at Blackmoor include:

1. Hole No. 14 – “A 400-yard par 4, dogleg right. It’s a bit of a risk-reward hole,” says Boggs. “You can play it straight away and have 160-170 yards to a tiny opening to the green surrounded by bunker. You can hit it just right of the fairway bunker. It’s about 202 yards from the back tees, however, so if you hit it a tad too far it will end up in the pond. The last option would be to rip the driver high over the trees with a bit of a cut and could possibly be chipping for par, or in the trees or O.B.”

2. Hole No. 18 – “A 509-yard par 5 with O.B. left and trees to the right. For most it’s a three-shot hole with a green surrounded by mounds and sidehill lies to the left, bunkers and pond to the right. If you hit a longer drive, it will leave you anywhere from 240 – 260 yards with a sloping fairway to the right, so the pond is largely in play. No matter if you go at it in two or play it as a traditional par 5, the green complex slopes from front to back and right to left so it’s hard to get the ball close.”

3. Hole No. 15 – “A 166-yard par 3 from the back tees over some wetlands to a green complex that is sloped from left to right and back to front. There are two large bunkers to the right of the green that are extremely deep, and to the right of the bunkers is more wetlands. It’s a tough little par 3.”
